Jiujitsu and Me |
|
I started training Jiujitsu back in 1999 with no idea what the future had enstore for me. I had trained in Karate and Tae Kwon Do for a long time before I found Jiujitsu. After the first class, I knew this was for me. I am not sure what appealed to me the most at that time. But today, there are many reasons why I love Jiujitsu.
1.The mental aspect of the game. 2. How it is evolving still to this day. 3 The discipline it takes to become proficient. 4. The bond it builds between you and your fellow training partners. 5. The people you meet and train with that become life long friends. When I first started training, Jiujitsu wasn't all that popular yet. I competed a lot my first 10 years of training. The tournaments we went to were small. To have 100 competitors was a huge turn out. The first competition I was in had only one guy in my division, and he was bigger and had been training awhile longer. Needless to say, I didn't do so well that day. Tournaments here in the Houston area along with competitors have grown. 600-700 competitors is the norm. I competed all through my journey. I still compete from time to time but my goals and focus have changed. I am still growing and learning. But, my students are my goal and focus now. To help them along their journey and provide them a safe, fun, learning experience that will be with them for a life time. One of the cool things I love about Jiujitsu is how it becomes YOURS... You take a mix of techniques, drills, and concepts and blend them all together to create your own personal "GAME". Your Jiujitsu is just that. Your own. Body types differ. Skill sets differ. People have their own attributes that make them different. These attributes are what makes your Jiujitsu different than anyone elses and what makes your Jiujitsu your very own. I can go on forever about Jiujitsu. The feeling you have when your done with a tough "Roll". Seeing the kids learn arm bars, back takes, and escapes. Watching new people shrimp for the first time. Seeing people grow and build confidence within themselves. Watching your students learn, grow, and begin to feel the passion as well. To be able to share my knowledge and passion for this Art, is what makes all the hard work and training worth it. |
A Little History
|
I have only personally trained under 1 instructor, Alvis Solis. I am what you would call loyal to the bone. I respect and trusted his teachings throughout my rise through the ranks. He has had the most impact on my Jiujitsu to say the least. I literally owe everything that I have learned about Jiujitsu and training to him. I started teaching when I was still a brown belt. I was able to teach the no-gi classes and a few of the fundamental classes. At first I was nervous, but it just seemed to flow out of me. I knew I had a passion for training and coaching, but not for teaching. As fate seems to have it, when we took over as owners and instructors, I felt ready. At least for the teaching part. As a business owner, its hard to separate the business from the pleasure. Its more to me than a business, its my passion. Its true when you love what you do, it never feels like work. And I love Jiujitsu. We started off small but were growing. We changed locations for a more visible front to the public. We are establishing our own name and reputation in the local community. We are extremely proud of our kids program which is growing fast. And we have an awesome core of adults and parents that train and support our school. Overall, were definitely moving in the right direction. We are a little over a year into our ownership. We have a core group of long time training partners and friends. The talent and experience level in every class is amazing. Watching the school grow. Seeing the students challenge themselves and push their limitations. Being part of something bigger than I could have imagined is what I have always wanted to be a part of. Family. Great Friends. Awesome Training. Life is good....
